    “Researchers build on existing beliefs and knowledge. In doing so they must be able to evaluate both the evidence of others as well as their own research. This paper is an example of research as part of a whole body of knowledge.”
     
    In your response you should:
    §  Outline what the research in this paper is about (the hypotheses and abstract would be helpful here)
    §  Explain how the authors use secondary research in the introduction of the paper. What do they present about past research into their topic area? Why do they do this?
    §  Review the methodologies used – list TWO independent instruments that are used to help them in their data analysis – how do these affect the reliability and validity of their data analysis?
    §  Briefly summarise THREE of the most significant points they made in the discussion of the results. What strengths and weaknesses can you see in their work?
    §  The authors suggest some limitations with their research. Are these the only ones?  Why is it important to identify limitations in research?
    §  Refer to the quote above – can you see evidence of this research supporting the statement provided? Discuss using specific examples from the research paper to support your view.
     
    Task Expectations:
    You are expected to demonstrate your understanding of the principles of good research and research methods with reference to Not Worth the Fuss After All? Your assignment is NOT about video games and violence – it is about RESEARCH.
    Research Article being analysed:

    It is recommended that you base your response on

    Task Requirements
    Hard copy to be submitted to your teacher on the due date before 2pm. Failure to do so will result in a zero grade unless you have followed assessment rules regarding medical certificate etc.
    You must type your response in 12pt font, double line spacing. Subheadings (You can use headings for each of the sections and the conclusion) may be used to logically order your response however otherwise your work should be written in complete sentences and in academic style. You must use in text referencing as per your English Study Guide. You are not required to make use of an extensive reference list. The research article and Aspin may be sufficient to complete the task.
    You will need to submit your final task to turnitin for a plagiarism check. This is compulsory and no grade will be released until this is done. The time limit for submitting to turnitin will be as per teacher directions. Non submission or plagiarism will result in a zero grade.
     
     
     
     
    A suggested approach to writing your critical analysis
    1           Do the necessary reading
    2           Form a preliminary opinion in relation to the above mentioned questions
    3           Discuss your opinion with a friend
    4          Write your critical analysis. This should be written in academic style using sentences and paragraphs that are linked together with an introduction and a conclusion. It should be written as one continuous piece. You can use headings for each of the sections and the conclusion
    5          Edit your critical analysis making sure there are no grammatical errors.

    ·         Demonstrates a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of  the role of secondary research in primary research.
    ·         Able to identify and focus on more significant aspects of the research article and relate these effectively to the notion of
    research as building on and developing existing knowledge. Excellent use of examples to support this.
    ·         Presents a sustained, logical and well-structured answer using relevant terminology and concepts.
     
     
    18-20
    ·         Demonstrates a thorough knowledge and understanding of the methodologies used with discussion of reliability and validity of research.
    ·         Demonstrates a thorough knowledge and understanding of secondary research. Relates this to the primary research paper.
    ·         Identifies and focuses on  significant aspects of the research article and relates these  to the notion of
    research as building on and developing existing knowledge. Strong use of examples to support this.
    ·         Presents a logical and well-structured answer using relevant terminology and concepts.
     
     
    15-17
    ·         Briefly discusses the methodologies used. May refer to validity and reliability.
    ·         Briefly discusses secondary research. May relate this to the focus research paper.
    ·         Identifies at least one significant aspect of the research article and briefly relates these to the notion of research as building on and developing existing knowledge. Some use of examples to support this.
    ·         Presents a structured answer using relevant terminology and concepts.
     
     
    12-14
    ·         Demonstrates a basic knowledge of the methodologies used. Limited or no clear understanding of validity and reliability in research.
    ·         Defines and identifies secondary research.
    ·         Identifies aspects of the research article and explains the notion of
    research as building on and developing existing knowledge. Limited use of examples to support this..
    ·         Uses some appropriate terminology and/or concepts.
     
     
    9-11
    ·         Limited definition or description of methodologies used. May refer to validity and/or reliability.
    ·         Some reference to secondary research.
    ·         Identifies one or two issues arising from the paper. Poor choice of examples.
    ·         Makes limited reference to relevant terminology and or/concepts
     
     
    6-8
    ·         Identifies methodologies used.  Very wek or nonexistent analysis of reliability/validity of these.
    ·         Cursory definition of ‘secondary research’.
    ·         Makes limited reference to relevant terminology and or/concepts. May include significant errors of fact and/or understanding.
    ·         Plagiarism will lead to disciplinary proceedings.
